Data Licenses
A number of data licenses are held in the tool, this includes the following:
- Land cover map (2024) under the Non-Commercial Government Licence. Data owned by UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology© Database Right/Copyright UKCEH
- OS terrain 50 data (2025) under OS open data
- Calculator for Road Emissions of Ammonia (CREAM v2A) owned and provided by Air Quality Consultants (AQC) Ltd
- The Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling System (ADMS) – Urban used in the service has a specific licence agreement with its owners CERC Ltd. that authorises its use within the service. Users can only access the modelling capability through the Get an air pollution assessment calculator user interface
- The observational meteorological data is derived from UK Met Office datasets and the Numerical Weather Predication (NWP) meteorological data is from European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts. The meteorological data is used in calculations within the service and all outputs from those calculations are free to use and distribute but resale or distribution of the data in original form is not permitted
In addition, the service uses the following data sets under Open Government Licence (OGL) sharing agreements and is subject to Crown copyright protection , this is highlighted in the terms and conditions and includes:
- Emission factors for pig and poultry from Environment Agency (the poultry emission factors are noted with a Northern Ireland tag)
- Northern Ireland cattle emission factors from Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) (noted with a Northern Ireland tag)
- UK agricultural emission factors from Simple Calculation of Atmospheric Impact Limits (SCAIL) by UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH)
- Nitrogen oxides (NOx) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) background maps (2021) from Local Air Quality Management (LAQM)
- Nitrogen oxides (NOx) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) background maps for Scotland (2021) from Scottish Air Quality
- Ammonia (NH3) background concentration from the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UK CEH) Concentration Based Estimated Deposition (CBED) dataset
- Vehicle emission factors for nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the Emission Factor Toolkit (EFT) (v13.0) produced by Defra
- NOx to NO2 Calculator (v9.1) from Local Air Quality Management (LAQM)
- Road traffic estimates (2024) diurnal profiles from Department for Transport
- Critical loads and levels for interest features at UK protected sites from UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH)
- Shapefiles for Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Areas of Special Scientific Interest (ASSIs), Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs) for Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales
